Seasonal Home Maintenance During Fall 

Fall is the perfect time of year to get some home maintenance done. It is neither too hot nor too cold, so it is great for both indoor and outdoor seasonal home maintenance. It may be the last chance you get to accomplish certain tasks before winter creeps in and it’s too cold to do so. Seasonal home maintenance during fall can be as easy as tidying up around the house, decluttering, and some basic cleaning. A clean house, an open window and a seasonal scented candle is one of life’s small pleasures. Knowing that your home is clean and properly maintained provides such a sense of relief and accomplishment. There are many things you can do to ensure that your home is properly maintained this fall, both indoors and out. 

Indoor Seasonal Home Maintenance Tasks To Do This Fall 

A key factor to a comfortable living space is a clean, properly maintained indoor environment. Fall is a great time to get some home maintenance and chores done inside the house. 

Doors & Windows: Inspect your home’s doors and windows for any drafts. This is a relatively easy fix, as you can simply fill in any drafts with some caulk from any home improvement store. If damage is more severe, you may need to think about getting doors or windows professionally repaired or replaced. 

Leakage: South Jersey tends to experience a lot of rain during fall. A key part of seasonal home maintenance in this area is to repair any areas that may be susceptible to leakage. As you probably already know, leaks and moisture damage can lead to mold development in your home. For smaller leaks, you may be able to just repair it on your own. However, for bigger jobs, it is recommended that you leave it to the professionals. Especially roof leaks or another area that could be potentially dangerous; we don’t want anyone getting hurt. 

HVAC Maintenance: Check your HVAC and air conditioning units for any maintenance that may be required. It is a good idea to replace dirty filters before winter so that your heating unit runs smoothly. This also helps to ensure good indoor air quality, meaning that you can breathe easy. 

Declutter & Cleaning: Once you’re finished with the bigger seasonal home maintenance projects, you can finish off with some quick cleaning and decluttering to freshen up your home for the season. Going through your clothes, items and knick knacks to clear out any clutter (and maybe make room for new stuff) can be a refreshing activity. Gutters & Downspouts: Gutters and downspouts can easily become clogged during fall. Make sure that clearing out gutters is not forgotten in your home maintenance routine. This helps to avoid any clogging and potential spillage. Ensure that downspouts are properly positioned to direct water down and away from your home in order to avoid water pooling around your home’s foundation. 

Foundation: Check your home’s foundation for any cracks, big or small and repair them promptly. As previously stated, South Jersey can experience a lot of rain during this time of the year. It is important that no water is able to get into your home to cause damage. 

Yard Work: Perhaps the easiest activity on the list, fall is a great time to get some yard work done. After all, it may be the last opportunity to do so before winter. With so many leaves falling in your yard, you don’t want it to get overcrowded with leaves and debris. Overcrowded yards tend to hold a lot of moisture, which can potentially cause issues for the foundation of your home. It doesn’t hurt that the yard is much more visually appealing after doing some yard work as well.

Having a clean, fresh, well maintained home is a great way to begin the fall season. It’s a great feeling to be able to come home and relax without worrying about all the little seasonal home maintenance tasks you need to get through. Accomplishing these tasks in the beginning allows you to enjoy the season and all the festivities that come along with it!
