How To Prevent Mold And Mildew

Quick Tips to Avoid Mold and Mildew

DO NOT use the same rag everywhere— If you overuse the same cleaning cloth on multiple surfaces, you are most likely just spreading germs rather than actually cleaning. You should change out or clean your cloths frequently.

NO DIRTY sponges— While sponges are a great cleaning, they are the ideal breeding ground for all kinds of germs, bacteria, and mold. If you find it difficult to part with your trusted sponge, be sure to sanitize them frequently by microwaving your completely wet sponge for two minutes (be sure to let sponge cool before handling). Sponges should be replaced at least once a month.

CLEAN your vacuum— A clean vacuum is essential to helping guarantee that all dirt and airborne germs are getting picked up. For bagless, canister vacuums- it should be emptied after every use. For bag vacuums- the bag should be replaced once it is one-third full.

REMOVING small areas of mold and mildew— If you find minor, isolated black spots on your tub, shower walls, or other damp areas, you can scrub them away with a few natural ingredients.

  • Vinegar- Fill a spray bottle with white, distilled vinegar and spray the area down. Allow to sit for an hour. Scrub clean. Allow area to dry.
  • Baking soda- Fill a spray bottle with one quarter tablespoon of baking soda and water. Spray the area and scrub clean. Rinse with water. Spray the area again with the baking soda solution and let dry.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide- Fill a spray bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Spray the area down and allow to sit for ten minutes. Scrub and wipe down the area.

ALWAYS make sure you have sufficient air circulation to keep humidity low.

IF YOU SEE or suspect a larger mold concern, especially on porous surfaces— CALL a professional to test your property. Mold is not something to be ignored. It will continue to grow and spread unless it is treated and removed correctly by a professional.
